When you install and first open Evidence Smart you are shown a fairly simple user interface. There are a number of tabs shown on the left handside that include; Scan, Results, Exclude, Settings and Advanced Shred. In the main window there are checkboxes showing various areas on your computer; Internet Explorer, Windows Software, Windows System and Internet Software. These four areas are subdivided even further in to section such as WinZip history, Regedit32 History etc.

You can check and uncheck all these various options if you wish to tailor the scan more to your own liking or you can just let the program scan every section and report any problems it may find. The next step is to click the scan now button.

Scan times with Evidence Smart are quick and you’re soon presented with results which again breaks down the problems found in each area of your computer. So for instance, if you want to micromanage what gets deleted by Evidence Smart you can click on the cookies submenu in the Internet Explorer menu and be shown a list of cookies that the program has flagged as a potential privacy problem and choose only to clean out those cookies.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to look through each area then all you have to do is simply hit the Clean button and the problem data will be shredded by Evidence Smart so it can never be recovered.

You can also tell Evidence Smart to exclude certain areas of your computer before you even begin the scan. This is handy if you have an area you know contains some senstivie data but you want to keep it for the time being.

In the settings menu you can tell the programs to startup with Windows, check for program updates and how many times you want the data to be overwritten by Evidence Smart. There are 3 options, one time overwrite, three and seven. The more times the data is overwritten the less chance there is of it been recovered but the longer it takes also to actually be erased.

Finally you can setup a scheldue if you wish so that Evidence Smart will scan your computer everyday, every week or every month and look for problems. A nice hands off solution to protecting your data and privacy.

Evidence Smart has a comprehensive help file with pictures to guide you. Email support is also available if you are still having problems. I sent them a query about the program but have yet to hear back. not good.

Evidence Smart Conclusion

Evidence Smart is a robust evidence eraser program. There are some good features here that can be used weather you have some good technical knowledge of how your computer runs, or if you are not so tech savvy the program will take care of you and keep your data private from prying eyes. Scan times are ok and shredding is efficent. One thing I really missed was the Guttman shredding process that you find in some of the other evidence eraser programs. Also there technical support via email could have been better.
